Australian Firefighters Calendar throws support behind Camp Oz for children with burns

The Australian Firefighters Calendar has added another worthy project to its list of charitable causes, this time Camp Oz, a getaway that brings together kids from all over Australia who have suffered traumatic burn injuries.

For the past 15 years, the camp has been funded by the Queensland-based Children’s Hospital Foundation. This year, a shortfall in funding threatened the future of the camp – until the calendar team stepped in.

“The camp offers a supportive environment in a beautiful beach setting for 16 children who have experienced burns trauma,” calendar director David Rogers said.

“It’s an incredibly important part of their recovery. Not only do they learn coping skills from health professionals, the camp is also a place where kids make friends for life. They come away knowing they aren’t alone, and with the confidence they need on the journey to young adulthood.”

The 4-day Camp Oz is designed for children aged between 8 and 16. Some of the kids have attended the event for years.

David said the 2017 Australian Firefighters Calendar was continuing its epic campaign to help those in need. Since its inception in 1993, it has raised more than $2 million for Australian-based charities.

“While there are many firefighter calendars out there, we are continuously humbled by the staggering levels of global support we receive for our calendar,” he said.

“We started out as a low key production to become a sophisticated offering. People say they love our quality of production, and we are always testing new and better ways to take photos. I’m sure the uniform helps as well!”

For those of you who haven’t yet seen one, the calendar brims with impossibly rugged Fireifghters. These men are real firefighters who, by the way, undergo a rigorous process to be chosen for the final 12.

“I’m fiercely proud of all these guys who put in so much time and energy to producing a world-class offering that wins so many fans and supports such great causes,” David said.

* The Australian Firefighters Calendar started in 1993 as a fundraiser by firefighters to send themselves to the World Firefighters Games, and to help burns victims. Today, the calendar is produced by a not-for-profit based in New South Wales, Australia. Millions of copies of the calendar have sold since its launch, making it one of the biggest sellers of its kind in the world.
